Irene Evelyn Griffin, the first born child of Ralph snd Zella May (Wheelihan) Griffin was born November 17, 1899 in Elm Twp, Dickey County, ND. She attended the Griffin School with her siblings, Noble, Etta and Alonzo. Irene married Wendell S Burnett in March 1920 and they were the parents of Warren Everett Burnett. The Burnetts farmed along the Elm River near Forbes where they raised sheep, poultry, horses, and small grains. Following Warren's death in WWII, Irene and Wendell moved to their farm in Elm Twp near Ellendale. Wendell died in 1970 and Irene remained on their farm with her numerous cats until moving into Ellendale in the 1980s. She had worked in many capacities as a farm wife, as a worker at the butcher shop and the sale barn, and as the "Market Day Numbers Lady." She was a 50 years plus member of the Eastern Star, Gold Star Mothers, and Dakota Club, and delivered Meals on Wheels well into her 90s. Irene was witty and had thousands of entertaining stories. She lived to be just a few months shy of her 100th birthday. Irene was adored by her neighbors and surviving family members, the children and grandchildren of her and Wendell's siblings: the Brauer, McNabb, Wheelihan, Griffin/Bauer, King and Walsh families.
