Bessie Lee Steppick was born March 15, 1895 to parents Joseph N. Steppick and Nancy Ann Ivey Steppick. She was the only daughter of seven children. Surrounded by all brothers, she learned to do whatever the boys did on the farm. At age 19, she married Ernest Steven Adkins and they had two sons, Troy "Milton" and Joe "Haskell" Adkins. She became a widow at age 53, when Ernest was killed in an accident involving a tractor.
Bessie lived most of her life in Rush Springs and Bailey, Oklahoma where she was known and loved by all.
