Susan, the third of eleven children of John and Ruth (Woodworth) Cox was born on April 3, 1838 in Lower Canning, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her siblings were Sarah, Judah, John, Prudence, Julia, Robert, Floretta, Watie, Martha & Isabel. Susan married Alonzo John Griffin in 1867 in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, Canada. They moved to Wayland (Cochituate), Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, to join the Griffin family shoe factory business and their seven children, John, Rebecca, Orrin, Ralph, Gertrude, Grace, & Myron were born there. After several tragedies including the death of their young son, John Chipman Griffin, and a fire that destroyed the portion of their factory, in 1882, Alonzo left by train for the Gold Rush. Along the way, he learned of land opportunity on the Dakotah prairie. He disembarked in Aberdeen (South Dakota) and pumped a handcar to the end of the tracks, about 40 miles north, where he staked a claim west of Ellendale, built a shanty and dug a well. Upon word that their new home was ready, Susan and their remaining children traveled to Aberdeen by train where Alonzo met them with a team of horses and took them to their new home in Dakotah Territory. Alonzo and Susan proudly worked the Griffin farm for the next two decades, until their son, Ralph, took it over. Susan died in 1912 and is buried next to her husband and several of their children in the Ellendale City Cemetery. Son Orrin died as a teenager due to an accident. Daughters Rebecca Griffin Snyder, Gertrude Griffin Lynde and Grace Griffin Wright and sons Ralph and Myron all lived long lives. Susan was the grandmother of Everett Snyder, Ethel Baker, Eva Winslow, Orrin Snyder, Frederick Snyder, Ruth Babcock and Dorothy Bothwell, Irene Griffin Burnett, Noble Griffin, Etta Griffin Brauer, Alonzo J "Lonnie" Griffin, Llewellyn R Lynde, Orrin Lynde, Grace Lynde Morrow Cowles, Jennie Wright McCarten, Gertrude Wright Hoel, Susie Wright Eckberg, Florence Wright Brookbank, Alice Griffin Gerdon, Ted Griffin, Dr. Everett Griffin, Melvin Griffin, Evelyn Griffin Hoffman, Helen Griffin Wanek, Mary Griffin Dixon, & Ralph Griffin.
