Dwaine Dwight “Gust” Arbogast, age 84 a lifelong resident of Stone Creek passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, under the care of Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia.
Born in Stone Creek on March 15, 1929, Gust, as he was known by his family and friends was a son of the late Clyde and Carrie (Baker) Arbogast.
He was a 1947 graduate of the former Stone Creek School having played basketball during his school career and was very proud of the fact he never missed a day of school.
Soon after graduating, Gust proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army where he received his training at Fort Carson in Colorado and was ultimately stationed in Anchorage, Alaska during the Korean Conflict; having been assigned to the 196th Infantry. In 2009 and 2010, Gust enjoyed the opportunity to return to both locations where he had previously been assigned.
On August 15, 1954, Gust married the former Marilyn Beitzel and together reared two daughters and have shared in nearly 59 years of marriage.
Ever active within his community, Gust was a longtime member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Stone Creek, where for many years he served on church council. He also had the opportunity to help to rebuild the building following a devastating fire which destroyed the historic structure. He served as a member of the Stone Creek Volunteer Fire Department and was active as the organization’s treasurer. Additionally, he and Marilyn are members of the Jefferson Grange where Gust previously served as Past Master of the organization.
At the encouragement of the late Dr. Wherley, Gust was instrumental in the formation of the Stone Creek Little League; a program in which he coached and kept an active involvement in for more than 50 years.
Professionally, Gust worked at the former Stone Creek Brick Plant and IF Ridge Tool at New Philadelphia prior to retirement. Never one to sit around, Gust soon took on part time positions with Bank One as a courier and Chuck Nicholson Auto as a vehicle driver.
Aside from everything else, Gust was a family oriented individual who did anything he could for his family having made many keepsake woodcrafts for them and always ensuring he was in attendance for his grandchildren’s activities. During the Christmas Holiday, it was his job to make the caramel treats and passed his recipe and knowledge of their creation to his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Sherry (Marvin) Debevec of New Philadelphia and Marla (Mark) Prysi of Dover and a brother, Bill (Margaret) Arbogast of Dover.
Four grandchildren, Christopher Debevec of New Philadelphia, Evan Debevec of Dover, Katie (Seth) Lute of Stone Creek and Karie (Broc) McMillen of New Philadelphia; four great-grandchildren, Thor and Evan L. Debevec , Degen Lute, and Addison McMillen as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
In addition to his parents, Gust was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Calvin Sauser and an infant sister.
The family will receive guests on Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. An additional time of visitation will be held on Friday, May 31, from 9:30 – 10:00 AM in the Zion Lutheran Church at Stone Creek. Pastor William Haggis, Sr. will lead a celebration of Gust’s life in church sanctuary on Friday at 10:00 AM. Burial with military honors will follow in the Stone Creek Cemetery. Following services, all are invited to join the family for a time of food and fellowship in the social hall of the Zion Lutheran church.
