Walter Raymond White Jr was a WWII US Army Air Force pilot assigned to the 443rd Bomber Squadron, 320th Bomber Group flying a B-26 Marauder, a medium range bomber. On 24 July 1943, Lt. White and his crew left their airbase (25 miles from Tunisia) to bomb the Marino Di Paolo RR yards. Lt. White's plane was one of six that were attacked by 20-25 Me109s on their return to base. Lt. White's plane was observed making a normal water landing so there was hope of the crew's survival. Air-Sea Rescue out of Palermo was not able to find any of the crew members. Lt. White and his crew are memorialized in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy. He was posthumously awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
