Funeral services for Ralph M. Amyx, 92, of Gainesville were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25 in the Gainesville Church of Christ with Hal-bert Smith officiating. Burial was in the Smith Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Amyx died at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Gainesville. He was born May 25, 1907, in Rockbridge, the son of Sidney and Edgie (Patterson) Amyx. His father, Sidney Amyx, established Amyx Auto Company with Ralph and his wife Mabel involved with the dealership from the beginning. He was president of the company, after the death of his father in 1951, until 1980 when his son Donald became president. Mr. Amyx served as the mayor of Gainesville for two years and as president of the Industrial Develop-ment Corporation. He was a charter member of the Gainesville Lions Club. In 1988, he was named Gainesville's Citizen of the Year. Mr. Amyx is survived by a son, Donald Amyx of Gainesville; a brother, Lile Amyx of Rockbridge; a sister, Bernie Sanders of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel, his parents, and four brothers, Clay, Dewey, Ray and Lawrence. Pallbearers were Ray Amyx, Sidney Amyx, Larry Amyx, Stacy Landers, John Ault and Charles Stevens.
