Bettie Jean Branum, a long-time resident of Elgin, died Thursday, August 6, 2015, at the Elgin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Bettie was born on August 29, 1937 to Lincoln and Nellie Creppon in Elgin, Texas. She was the second born of four children, the only girl out of three boys: Bobby Joe, Ronny, and Doug.

She married LC Branum in 1958 and became a traditional Air Force wife, traveling far outside the city limits of Elgin, Texas. She was a devoted stay-at-home mom while her children were young, but went to work as a custodian for the University of Texas when they entered school.

Bettie retired from the University of Texas, but this didn’t slow her down a bit. She worked in the nursery of the First Baptist Church for about 7 years, in the Elgin High School cafeteria as a lunch lady for 5 years, and for the Elgin Sonic for 7 years from 2003 to 2010.

She loved to work in her yard, dance, and spoil her grandchildren. She was Nana to one and all, and her home was always open to everyone. She kept her freezer full of Schwann’s ice cream and chicken nuggets, and her home was a favorite hang-out for half the town of Elgin. She took in three exchange students when they needed a home and became a “worldwide” Nana to Stine, Eetu, Tony, Paula, Natasha, Max, Dominique, Daniel, and Bjorn.

In her final years, Bettie suffered from Alzheimer’s and could no longer remember the joys and delights of a life well-lived, but occasionally she would have a moment of clarity and the old Bettie would show up with a twinkle in her eye and a smile of recognition on her lips. Sometimes it would be the mention of a favored childhood location or a familiar face that would bring forth the words, “Hey, I know you,” but for the most part she stayed in the silent and closed off world of a patient with Alzheimer’s, much to the sorrow of her family. She often spoke of “going home” and it is comforting to know that she is now in her heavenly home, happily reunited with her son, Steven, and so many others who have gone on before her.

Bettie is preceded in death by her parents, Lincoln and Nellie Creppon; her brother and sister-in-law Bobby Joe and Shirley Creppon; and her son, Steven Wayne Branum.

She is survived by her son, Greg and his wife, Jennifer; daughter, Pam and her husband, Randy; four grandchildren; Erin, Miranda, Grayson Nickel, and Christopher Branum; three great-grandchildren, Brooklynn, Beau, and Maverick Harris; and brothers Ronny Creppon and his wife, Yvonne; and Doug Creppon and his wife, Shirley; and two nieces and two nephews.

A visitation will be held at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Bettie's Life will be held at Providence-Jones Family Chapel. She will be laid to rest in the Elgin Cemetery.
