LEETONIA — Mary J. Trenkelbach, 87, of 207 High Street, died Tuesday at her home.
Mrs. Trenkelbach was born Oct. 20, 1918 in Salem, a daughter of Nicholas and Maggie Harold Shafer and had lived in this area all of her life. She graduated from Salem High School in 1936 and from Ohio University in Athens in 1943 with a B.S. in chemistry. After college she was employed at the Dupont Corporation in Cleveland for 18 months until her marriage. In later years she taught physics and business math at Leetonia High School, and she also wrote a column about Leetonia for the Salem News and Youngstown Vindicator. For 10 years, she served as clerk for the village of Leetonia, retiring in 1984.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the Leetonia Shade Tree Commission.
She is survived by her husband, Henry T. Trenkelbach, whom she married July 9, 1944; two daughters, Judy Hackenson of Lisbon and Susan (Gerry) Less of Leetonia; three sons, James (Gale) Trenkelbach of Jacksonville, Fla., Henry (April) Trenkelbach, Jr., of Leetonia and John (Roxie) Trenkelbach of Calcutta; a son-in-law, Gene Leffler of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, James Shafer of Morgantown, W.Va.; a sister-in-law, Betsy Shafer of Salem; 12 grandchildren, Harry Leffler and Jeffrey Leffler, both of Indianapolis, Ind., Rob (Nancy) Horning of Columbus, Sara (Britt) Leffler of Peninsula, Ted (Larie) Trenkelbach and Jerry (Kate) Trenkelbach, both of Washington, D.C., Maggie Less of Leetonia, Jacob Less with the U.S. Navy, Lynne Trenkelbach of Kent, Jennifer Trenkelbach with the U.S. Army, Eric Trenkelbach of Leetonia, and Sherrin Trenkelbach of Long Island, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren, Claire Leffler, Henry Leffler-Beutel, Tasia Less and Emma Wright.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise Leffler; two brothers, Thomas Shafer and R. Lee Shafer; a son-in-law, Lee Hackenson; and a daughter-in-law, Janice Leffler.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Leetonia, with Pastor Kari Lankford officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
Memorials may be made to either the Leetonia Shade Tree Commission or the MVI Hospice.
