Joseph was born near present day Westminster in Carroll County, MD. He was baptized on 29 Apr 1772 under the name Johan Jost, son of Jost and Anna Margretha Leydig at Pipe Creek Church (aka St. Benjamin's or Krider's), an Evangelical Lutheran church in Carroll County. He apparently came from MD to Bedford Co., PA, with his father (Jost/Joseph, Sr.) and mother (Margretha) and siblings when he was about 10-13 years of age. Joseph married Hannah Griesing/Griesinger on 5 Jan 1792 in Somerset Co., Southampton Twp, PA. He was living in Southampton Twp, Somerset Co., PA, for the 1817 Triennial Assessment (listed as Joseph Lidick). He apparently died between 1818-1820 in Somerset County with eleven children listed in his Estate record. Listed in order of birth: Rachel, Elias, Susannah, Samuel, William, Jonathan, Catherine, Elizabeth, Druscilla, Hannah, and George. His wife, Hannah, later moved to Ohio where some of her children had relocated and married George Harrier.

Joseph appeared to be a quite successful land owner finally owning about 800 acres. In 1814 deed it states that he had 20 head of cattle, some grain fields, and some sort of fruit trees (apples?)

Joseph was only about 48 years of age when he died and he left no will. All estate matters were handled by the Orphans Court of Somerset Co. For unknown reasons it took until 1846 to dispose of his assets and make distribution to his heirs.

Joseph's place of burial is not known but assumed to be on his property. Comp's church was not founded until 1809 and I am not sure of when the church cemetery was started where so many of the early Leydigs are buried.

Additional information may be added later to his bio.
