Avino, Dolores Moja
June 17, 1920 - March 21, 2014
Moja was born in Jesenice, Slovenia, the daughter of Ernest Rekar, a graduate lawyer from the old University of Prague, and Josephine "May" Schrey. Moja is survived by her daughter Mignon Snider and her husband, Bart, two grandchildren, Moja Belmont and Edward Brennan, and seven great-grandchildren. Her son, Dana Moore, predeceased her, as did her husband, Lawrence Moore. She also leaves two loving nieces and her nephew who live in Rome, Italy.
Her father was an important businessman in the Slovenian wood and trading industry. During the years 1939 through 1941, Moja and her sister traveled across Europe with their mother as a part of their education. In 1941, while they were visiting in Rome, Hitler invaded Slovenia. The Germans arrested her father, so Moja, her mother and sister could not return home. Her father was imprisoned and all the family property and possessions were stolen by the Germans. Moja, her mother and sister stayed in Rome. At the end of the war, Moja met Lawrence Moore, a U.S. Naval officer. They were married in Rome in 1945 and moved to the New York City and later to Washington, DC, where Mr. Moore practiced law.
In 1965, Moja moved back to Rome with her son Dana. She spent much of her time caring for her mother and her sister who was suffered with Parkinson's disease. In 2000, she moved back to Sarasota from Rome to be near her children.
At various times in her life Moja worked as a model and make-up artist. She spoke five different languages and for many years she taught a class in conversational Italian at the Senior Friendship Center. She taught her last class just one week before her death. We will all remember her cheerful attitude and her beautiful smile.
A funeral mass will be held at Incarnation Church, Thursday March 27 at 9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Sarasota Senior Friendship Center.
