He attended Mt. Ayr High School. John was a member of the United States Army, serving 4 years.
His marriage was to Janet Alberts on March 21, 1957 in Crown Point, IN. She survives.
John was a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Vets Association.
John worked for Crystal Dairy hauling milk for many years. He also drove for 30 years at G&G Oil of Muncie, hauling fuel.
He enjoyed racing as a spectator and mechanic, John also enjoyed spending time with his family.
Surviving along with his wife are sons, Roger (wife: Zenda) Lanning, Joe Lanning, and John (wife: Edwina) Lanning; an aunt, Ann Wortley. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death along with his parents is a brother, Glen Lanning; a sister, Ruth Lanning.
