Gertie was the fifth of seven children born to shoe factory owners, Alonzo and Susan (Cox) Griffin of the Cochituate area of Wayland, Massachusetts, a Boston suburb. As a young child, the family relocated to the prairies of Dakotah Territory. Her siblings were: brothers John, Orrin, Ralph, Myron Griffin and sisters Rebecca Griffin Snyder and Grace Griffin Wright.
Gertie grew up on the Griffin family farm west of Ellendale. At the age of 19, she married Ralph Lynde and they lived in McPherson Co, SD until settling in Ellendale where they were co-owners with his brothers of Lynde Implement and Garage. Gertie was involved in many early Ellendale organizations.
She was the mother of sons Llewelyn R and Orrin Lynde and daughter, Grace Lynde Morris Cowles, and the grandmother of Lew Lynde, Kathryn Lynde Merrick, Jonette Lynde Stearns, Beverly Lynde, Ralph C Lynde, and Orrin Morrow.
