Former mayor of Charleston, South Carolina.

Born in Charleston to the late J. Palmer Gaillard and Eleanor Lucas Gaillard, Mr. Gaillard enlisted in the Navy in December 1941, shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served on active duty for four years, first as an enlisted man and later as a commissioned officer. He was an aviator who flew newly made fighter jets and other aircraft.

He married Lucy Foster July 15, 1944 and together they had three sons.

He was on Charleston City Council for 8 years and was first elected as Charleston's 25th mayor in 1959 and served until 1975.

Mr. Gaillard was the second longest serving mayor of Charleston serving four terms and is the namesake for the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium located in downtown Charleston.

He was a member of: St. Andrews Society of Charleston (former President), Hibernian Society, Charleston Club (former President), Carolina Yacht Club (former Commodore), Elks Lodge #242 (former member), American Legion Post # 112 (former member), Agricultural Society of SC, Rotary Club of Charleston, and St. Johns Hunting Club. Mr. Gaillard was a former member of the Board of Directors for the Home Federal Savings and Loan Association/South Trust Bank, Ruscon Coropration, and Historic Charleston Foundation. He was formerly a trustee of the US Conference of Mayors and Past President of the Municipal Association of South Carolina.

Mr. Gaillard was a life long member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, and a past Senior Warden. At the time of his death, he was a Board member of the Charleston Scientific and Cultural Fund and Bishop Gadsden Community.

Married for 57 years, his loving wife, Lucy, departed this life in October 6, 2001. He is survived by three sons, J. Palmer Gaillard, III and his wife Henrietta Freeman Gaillard, W. Foster Gaillard and his wife Susan Street Gaillard, and Thomas H. Gaillard all of Charleston, SC; 5 grandchildren, John P. Gaillard, IV, M.D. and his wife Lori, Emmie Gaillard Hershey and her husband Clay, Mary Leize Gaillard, Susan Huguenin Gaillard, and W. Foster Gaillard, Jr.; and 3 great grandchildren, Clay W. Hershey, Jr., Thomas Gaillard Hershey, and Alston M. Gaillard.
