Hontz, Donald R. 58
Norvelt

Donald R. Hontz, 58, of Norvelt, died suddenly at his home on Sunday, April 13, 2008.

Born Sept. 28, 1949, in Mt. Pleasant, he was the loving son of the late Helen Hontz DeArmint, who died in 1973.

Don was a loving father, husband, brother, uncle, friend and a gentle man. His daughters were his pride and joy and he was so very proud of the lovely women they have become. He found the love of his life in Sandra Hoffer and together they were one. He was a hero to his sister. Don was a lover of trains and loved to search, buy and restore Marx and Lionel Trains. He loved his toy trains as a boy and later turned that love into a passion. Don was a member of Calumet VFD for 19 years and served as past fire chief. His dedication and service to the fire department was instrumental in keeping it viable for the community. Don spent many years hunting and fishing with Uncle Kenny Hontz at their cabin in Brookville. Sometimes hunting didn't start till noon, but life is all about a good nap. Don was a veteran of the Army during the Vietnam era from 1969 to 1971. In those two years of service, Don reached the highest rank attainable, as sergeant. He was trained as a radio teletype operator and was extremely proud of his service to his country. Don was honored to be a guest speaker at the Memorial Day service at Hecla Honor Roll and serve as master of ceremonies for two years. Don was presently a funeral director's assistant at the Hoffer Funeral Home, Norvelt, where his kindness and compassion helped many people through difficult times. Previously, Don had been employed at Norelco, Pittsburgh, Westinghouse Electric, East Pittsburgh and Shearer, St. Clair Supply, Greensburg and Rochez Brothers, Braddock.

In addition to his mother, Don was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Crofutt; and his uncles, Kenny Hontz and Tom Hontz and his wife, Ellen.

He was the loving husband to Sandra L. Hoffer; the loving father to Amy Shields and her husband, Michael, of Brighton, Colo., and Audrey Gavula and her husband, John Erik, of Norvelt; loving brother to Nancy Albright and her husband, Charles, of Norvelt; uncle to Michael Albright, Dana and Christina Crofutt. He is also survived by his aunts, Audrey "Babe" Lizza and her husband, James "J.R.," of Latrobe, and Janet Hontz, of United; and several cousins.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, Norvelt. A military service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home, followed by Don's funeral service to be held at 11 a.m. with Pastor David Greer officiating. Interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery, Kecksburg, Mt. Pleasant Township, with military honors accorded by the AmVets Post 94 of United and the Armburst Veteran's Association.
