Henry was born to Eliphalet and Elizabeth (Brewer) Armstrong, the first of five children. His siblings were Fred, Delmar, Anna, and Florence "Flossie". His growing up years were spent in Steuben County, New York.

December 31, 1888 he married Sarah E. West in Springwater, Livingston, New York. To this union were born three children - Sidney E. and Reginald H., both born in Geneseo, Livingston County, New York, and Earl C. born in Angelica Allegany County, New York.

In 1894 he graduated from The Geneseo State Normal School, now the State University of New York at Geneseo, and in September took the position of principal of the union school at Angelica, Allegany County. A few years later he became the principal of the Avoca Union School in Steuben County. Shortly before his death, he was elected to The Steuben County Conference of Principals and School Commissioners and served as the secretary. He died unexpectedly of typhoid pneumonia at the young age of 31.
