The only Gerhardys in California who were born between 1835 and 1845 are Charles ([AKA Carl} who died in 1871), William & Philip. All three were born in Hannover, Germany, and were probably brothers.

There is some question about the dates of Philip's birth and death. Cemetery records say he died 25 Mar 1928, while the California Death Index says he died 25 Mar 1927. Either one could be a transcription error by the person who typed up the handwritten records.

A biography of Philip says he was born 22 Feb 1841. Cemetery records say his age at death was 88 years, 1 month and 3 days, meaning he was born 22 Feb 1840. So, there is agreement on the day of his birth, but not on the year nor his age at death. For the purpose of this memorial the year of birth is based on the earlier records (1880 and 1900 census) that suggest that 1840 is more likely to be correct than 1841. Whether to use 1927 or 1928 as the year of death is a tossup. Both the cemetery records and the California death index records were created at the time of death, and the discrepancy can only be attributed to a transcription error. This memorial uses the 1927 date on the theory that the California Death Index carries more weight than the cemetery record, but that is a judgment call and may be wrong.

The 1900 census lists Philip's date of birth as Feb 1840, which would match him to the cemetery record. However, the 1880 census lists Philip as being born in 1839 and William in 1840, while the 1910 census lists Philip's year of birth as 1841. William is not enumerated for 1910. It is possible that this grave is actually William's, but the likelihood is that it is Philip.

Grave is unmarked.

Born at the Castle of Hardenberg, Hanover, Germany, February 22, 1841, and is the son of Prof H. Gerhardy, a graduate of Heidelberg; residing in his birthplace until 1855, when he came to America on a pleasure trip, but on his arrival in New York, being so favorably impressed with the city, he concluded to seek his fortune in the New World, and immediately found employment in a large tea store, where he remained for three years.

He then, in 1858, concluded to come to California, and with a company of young men he came, via the Isthmus of Panama, from whence he sailed for San Francisco, and there found employment in the Mint Market for about two months, when he started a similar business for himself, in which he was very successful, making some $30,000 in sixteen months.

He then sold out, and proceeded to the Russian River, where he engaged in the stock business; purchasing a large number of cattle, he drove them to Sacramento, were he met with a serious loss in the drowning of most of his stock at the time of the flood in that city in 1862.

He then returned to San Francisco, and engaged in the butcher business, and thirteen years ago transferred his business to Oakland, and opened his present shop at Nos. 829 and 831 Broadway.

As proprietor of the well-known San Francisco Market, Mr. Gerhardy, in early times, has met with many reverses, but with a strong will and strict integrity he has surmounted them all, and is now in easy financial circumstances, and doing a prosperous business. With an exceedingly generous nature he lends a helping hand to all charities, and is highly respected by all who know him.

At the age of forty years our subject was married to an estimable young lady, the daughter of Elder G. W. Kinkade, a graduate of the Woodland College, Yolo County.
