Henry John Strand was a lifelong resident of Palmyra Township, Brown County, South Dakota, being born there on his parents' homestead on November 13, 1884. He was the second child of Norwegian immigrants, Syvert and Helena Strand, having seven siblings born to them: Emil, Solven, David, Conrad, Mabel (Ofstedal), and Cora (Mellang), two half-siblings born to Syvert and Maria (Flakoll Helland): William and Doris (Thoreson) and two step-siblings: Agnes (Tveit) and Bert Helland.
Henry grew up farming with his father and siblings. He married Chlora Payne at her parents' home in McPherson County, South Dakota in 1909. They built a large farmhouse on their farm in Palmyra Township, Brown County where they raised their family and entertained members of the community with house parties and barn dances. Their children were: Harold, Lucie (Kiesz), Leona (Jones) and Dorothy Jean (Lynde Hansen). They were the grandparents of: Leslie Strand, Carol Strand Nixon, Phyllis Kiesz Bruhn, Robert Kiesz, Harriet Jones, David Jones, Janice Jones Podoll, John Lynde, Jon J Lynde, Vikki Lynde Tiffany, and Connie Lynde VanGarven.
Mrs. Strand passed away at their home in 1953. Henry died at the age of 90 in Ellendale, ND and his funeral was held at Christ the King Lutheran Church.
