Helen(a) (Hage) K. Johanneson was born Dec 16, 1855 in Telemark, Norway to Knut Johanneson & his wife, Birgitt Olsdatter. She was christened at Laerdal's Borgund Stave Church on Feb 10, 1856. During her immigration voyage to America in the late 1800s, she and her sister, Helen E Johanneson, met two brothers named Syvert and Engebret Strand. Before exiting the ship, the girls took the name Strand as well and later married the brothers in Minnesota. Their father, Knut, also took the name Strand upon arrival in the U.S. These Strand families settled in Palmyra Township, Brown County, South Dakota and were founding members of Aurdal Lutheran Church near Forbes, ND. Syvert and Helena were the parents of Emil, Henry, Solven, David, Conrad, Mabel (Ofstedal) & Cora (Mellang). There are some mentions of another child who died in infancy, but about whom no documentation has been found thus far. Helena died Nov 10, 1900 when Cora was less than two years old. Syvert later married Maria Flakoll Helland, widow of Peter Helland, & mother of Agnes (Tveit) and Berthold Helland. Syvert & Maria then had two more children, William and Doris (Thoreson). Helena, Syvert, Maria, Helen & Engbrecht, Knut and several other family members are buried at Aurdal Cemetery.
