After high school he enlisted in the US Army and joined the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper in the 457th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion.

After the Army he returned to Arizona where he met and married Elinor Caughlin to whom he was happily married for the last 65 years of his life. He took his degree at NAU where he was captain of the football team and worked as a therapist with wounded veterans at Fort Whipple.

After two years as head football coach in Springerville, he moved to El Centro, CA in 1955 to start a career at Central Union High School that lasted 30 years. Starting as an assistant football coach & science teacher, he worked as Athletic Director and Vice Principal before becoming Principal & Superintendent of CUHS.
