On January 24, 1918, Corporal Harry H. Burpee was in the 100th Aero Squadron, 9th Squad, and he was aboard the Troopship "Tuscania" enroute to Le Havre, France. On the evening of Feb. 5, 1918 the Tuscania was torpedoed and sunk by a German Submarine while off the coast of Scotland, Harry was on the survivors, rescued by a British destroyer and taken to Ireland. From Ireland he was made his way to England, and then to France. Harry was good friends with Reginald Hosken; they both lived in Kern Co., California, and were friends prior to entering the military service, they were both survivors of the Tuscania. Later, that year, Harry Burpee was transferred to the 317th Squadron.

Harry H. Burpee died at the University of California Hospital in San Francisco. He had come from his home in Maricopa CA to Bakersfield CA with eye troubles. He was rushed to San Francisco where an operation was done on the brain tumor which was causing pressure on his eyes, but he died following the operation.

Members of the American Legion post in Maricopa, where he was a member, served as pallbearers. The Maricopa and Bakersfield posts furnished the firing squad.
