Judy Ann Aikman (Osburn), 68, passed away August 15 with her husband Jim at her side.
Judy was born in Indianapolis, IN on August 21, 1946, to Agnes and Rudy Osburn. She attended St. Philip Neri Grade School and Scecina Memorial High School. She earned her undergraduate degree from Marian University and a master’s degree from Indiana State University.
After her husband left the USAF, the family moved to Evansville, IN, where Judy worked at the Youth Service Bureau as the Crisis Line coordinator and House Arrest Supervisor. The family later moved to El Paso, TX. There, Judy earned her Texas teaching certificate and found her true life's passion. She devoted herself to helping children learn to read, and in 1996 she was named the reading teacher of the year for the El Paso ISD. After moving to Pharr, TX, she continued her teaching career at McAullife Elementary, McAllen ISD. At the time of her retirement she was helping children develop their love of reading as the school Reading Interventionist.
Once Judy's friend, always Judy's friend - her friendships from childhood lasted throughout her life. Judy and Jim relocated many times over the years, and Judy made many dear friends in each of the places they lived. She treasured her teacher friends and continued her lunches with them after retirement.
Judy's other light in her life was her grandchildren. She never left home without her grandma bag filled with books and games.
Judy is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Jim Aikman; her daughter Laurie Rakoff (Nathan), grandchildren Alec, Jarod and Alyssa; her daughter Shelley Aikman (Paul Verhaeghen), grandson Bodhi; and her brother Tom Osburn (Liz); sister in laws Martha Yunker and Jane Aikman.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 19 at Kreidler Funeral Home from 5PM to 7PM. A funeral mass and memorial service will be held at St. Philip Neri, Indianapolis, IN, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to: St. Philip Neri School, 545 Eastern Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46201. Judy Aikman Scholarship Fund.
