James was educated at the Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Georgia. He came to Columbia, SC, in 1909 and started working with E G Seibels as a clerk. James later became assistant manager with the Cotton Fire and Marine Underwriters with Seibels, one of the largest cotton insurance companies in the United States. He was employed with them for over 25 years. James met his wife, Agnes Mary McGregor, at Seibels in 1909. She was employed at Seibels as a stenographer. They were married on November 27, 1912, and were blessed with seven sons and two daughters.
