Jim attended McMaster Grammar School, Wardlaw Junior High, and graduated from Columbia High School in 1932. He attended Citadel College for two years. He went to work for Seibels Bruce & Company as an accountant where he met his wife to be, Elma Crouch. They have four children: Marcia, Elizabeth, James V, and Michael. Jim was in the US Army in WWII and served in New Guinea. He was honorably discharged in March 1946.
