On the morning of May 3, 1940, at 7:15 AM, NYPD Captain Max Finkelstein, 56, Commanding Officer of the 94th Police Precinct (at 100 Meserole Ave Brooklyn, NY 11222) committed suicide after he was forced to retire in the midst of a Bail Bond Scandal. He filed for retirement the day before his death. What made the Bail Bond Scandal so significant was that it involved members of Murder, Inc. - namely Abe Frosch and his parents Lena and Isadore.

Finkelstein was born on March 5, 1881, in Russia and was naturalized in 1905. He joined the NYC Police Department in May 29, 1911, and rose through the ranks to become Captain.

In 1940, he was the 94th suicide in the Police Department since Sept. 24, 1934, when Lewis J. Valentine became commissioner.

Finkelstein's suicide occurred in the bathroom of his home at 181 Lenox Road in East Flatbush, Brooklyn where the 30-year veteran of the NYPD shot himself in the head with a .32-caliber handgun. His body was found by his wife Dora.

He was survived by his wife Dora, 18 year-old son Melvin; daughter Helen (who was married to Joseph Sobel two weeks prior) and daughter, Florence.
