On March 7,1843, Masten at the age of 34 become Buffalo's thirteeth Mayor. In 1845, he won his second mayoral term, (1,837 to 1,538 votes) by 1845 the population of Buffalo was 29,973. The First Civilian owners (Joseph and Christina Masten "his wife") of the Wilcox Manison on Delware Avenue. In 1946, when the medical school in Buffalo was established, Masten was a member of the council that included Millard Fillimore and George Clinton. From 1856 until his death in 1871, Masten hold the position of Superior Court Judge.
Judge Masten became ill and died Friday April 15,1871. The best way to descibe Judge Joseph G Masten can be summed up in epitaph carved into the stone marking his burial ground in the middle of section TT in Forest Lawn Cemetery "an upright judge, an eminent lawyer, a faithful public serbant, an esteeand citizen, a true gentleman.
Parks and schools around the City of Buffalo had been named for him.
