John M. Kierzek was born to Polish immigrants, Jacob and Hedwig Paszek Kierzek. The eldest child, he excelled at academics and photography, becoming a teacher and going on to become a Professor of English in Oregon State University from where he retired. He married Louise Pierce and had one daughter. John Kierzek is known for his Fundamentals of English textbook which is still required in colleges today.
