Martin, Garet 69—June 17, 1943 to June 07, 2013—Margaret Martin dropped the 'Mar" of her first name sometime in her twenties and became Garet for the remainder of her life. The new name suited her personality. Garet, the daughter of Sam and Ellen Martin, was born in Portland on July 17, 1943. She was intensely proud of being a fourth generation Oregonian and of her family heritage. One of her grandfathers was Charles Martin, a governor of Oregon in the 1930s; the other John Bowman, owned multiple retail stores in Portland during the 1920s. In spite of her establishment background, Garet led the life of a free spirit. She loved meeting new people and had no aversion to talking to strangers. Garet was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Portland and attended Marylhurst College where she pursued her interests in various arts including music, dance and painting. She had a keen eye for color, was a skilled craftsperson, a talented dancer and a devoted fan of Motown music. Her interests were diverse; they included gardening, all aspects of nature, people suffering from brain injuries and other mental disorders and the plight of the less fortunate. She was a kind and gentle soul who will be widely missed. Garet is survived by her three brothers, Charles (Chuck) of Portland, John (Jack) of Washington D.C. and Thomas (Tom) of Oberlin, Ohio; and her longtime friend and significant other, Easton Cross.
