Joan Adams Sheldon Frazier went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 21, 2015. Joan was born to John G. and Alma Jones Adams, Sr on August 3, 1923, in a small house off Hwy 11, south of the "Hub Junction" intersection near Social Circle, GA, as the second of five children. Her mother died while Joan was of an early age and she moved with her father, her sister and a brother to Atlanta. Her two youngest brothers remained, split and each was raised by a separate grandparent in the "Brick Store "area near where Joan was born. Joan graduated from Druid Hills High School and then in 1943 from Saint Joseph's School of Nursing, entering the military as a 2nd Lieutenant, Army Nurse Corp. She was assigned to Camp Wheeler Army Hospital (Macon) GA where she ran a medical ward and had a patient arrive, a young infantry lieutenant, who was severely injured in a glider crash training for the invasion of Europe (D-Day). She and that soldier, Nicholas (Nick) Theodore Sheldon of Clifton NJ, were married seven months later at the Camp Wheeler Army Chapel in 1944. A year later, after the birth of their first son Ted at Camp Wheeler, Joan got out of the army and became an Army wife. She and Nick were at army duty stations all over the United States and twice in Germany. Nick was an artilleryman in the Korean War and they lived in 19 locations from 1945-1958. Joan loved the Lord and with Nick, who was a lay preacher, they helped establish churches and taught Bible studies wherever they went spreading Gods Word. Joan and Nick had two more sons, Joe born in Bad Canstatt Army Hospital, Germany, and David born at Great Lakes Navy Hospital, Chicago. She has the pictures and nick-nacks from a life of world travel, plus a lifetime of friends she met and kept up with all those years. Tragedy stuck in 1958 while they were stationed in Germany when Nick died in surgery to repair complications from a Korean War back injury. A shocked family relocated back to the Atlanta area with boys only 12, 11 and 4 years old. There Joan reared her three sons (She had her hands full), putting them through college while working part time as a nurse at Georgia Baptist Hospital. In 1975 she married Judson Frazier of Pascagoula, MS and afterward they moved to Dadeville, AL where he passed away in 1991. Joan subsequently came back to the Covington area and there became active in Shiloh Baptist Church. In 2013, the church presented Joan a plaque "recognizing her 67 years of continuous faithful work for her ministry for Jesus." She is preceded in death by her parents John G, Alma and step-mother Hattie Adams, her husband's Nicholas Theodore Sheldon and Judson P. Frazier, and her brother John G Adams, Jr. She is survived by her sons Ted (Linda) Sheldon, Joe (Kay) Sheldon, and David (Sue) Sheldon, her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, her sister Peggy Fett, and her brothers Harry (Nan) Adams and Hulon (Dianne) Adams and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10:30am on Tuesday, August 25, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 9595 Highway 142, Newborn, GA 30056, interment will follow at Adams Family Cemetery. Visitation is at J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home in Covington, Monday, August 24 from 6pm - 8pm. In lieu of flowers contributions are requested in her memory to Shiloh Baptist Church Building Fund. Dress for all services is open collar business casual. J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home, 2157 East Street, S.E., Covington, GA 30014, 770-786-2524 is in charge of the arrangements.
