Donald E. Hawkins, 88, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Brookdale Senior Living of South Bend.

Donald was born in Oak Park, IL to L.G. and Anne (Coady) Hawkins, on April 28, 1927. On May 3, 1952 he married the former Lucille A. Vyverman who preceded him in death on November 4, 2010, after 58 years of marriage. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Anne (Charles) Kleinfehn, of Knox, IN, and Patti (David) Meuninck, of Mishawaka, IN. He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Hawkins, and one grandson. Besides his daughters, Don is survived by grandchildren, Amy (Brian) Knab of Charlotte, NC, Matt (Heather) Kleinfehn of Knox, IN, Danny Meuninck of Seward, AK, Mallory Meuninck of Mishawaka, IN, Monica Meuninck, of Mishawaka, IN, Crystal (Pancho) Garza of Plymouth, IN, Angela (Jason Lutes) Hawkins of Elkhart, Ashley Hawkins and Lindsay Hawkins, both of Mishawaka, IN, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Donald was an active member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church of Mishawaka, serving as a lector, cantor, and member of the school board.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, Don was proud of his service in the South Pacific on the L.S.T. 951, delivering tanks to the troops. Because of his service, he was awarded a Wish of a Lifetime trip in April of 2014, to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC, along with his daughters, and 7 other veterans from around the country and their families. It was a trip that his daughters will never forget.

Don’s family would like to thank the special “family” of Brookdale Assisted Living, who adopted Don and took care of him like family for the last 3 years. Even though his mind was failing him due to Alzheimer’s, he was always a kind, sweet man who never lost his gentleman’s manners, nor his sense of humor.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 27, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St., Mishawaka, and from 10:00-11:00 a.m., prior to the 11:00 a.m. services on Friday, August 28 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave., Mishawaka, IN. Msgr. Bruce Piechocki will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Wish of a Lifetime Foundation in memory of Donald Hawkins, or to the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, September 19, 2015.
