Anne Zimmer was born in 1927 in Washington D.C., the daughter of Hanson Edward Ely, Jr., and Anne Carter Lee.

She was a graduate of St. Catherine's School in Richmond, Virginia, and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. After college she worked for ten years as a freelance writer in New York City, where she met her husband Frederick Allen Zimmer, Jr.

When the couple moved to Columbus, Ohio, she completed a Master's degree at Ohio State University. She also accompanied her husband on his two Fulbright years in India and Pakistan and on other extensive world travels.

After he retired, they moved to Upperville, Virginia, where she continued her career as a writer.

In 1997, she published The Robert E. Lee Family Cooking and Housekeeping Book and became a popular speaker at many historical sites associated with the Lee family.

Her husband preceded her in death on February 6, 2015.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Carter Vogel, with her husband, Paul of Essen, Germany, and Upperville, Virginia. She also leaves behind one grandson, Christopher Vogel, with his wife, Kelley of Dallas, Texas.

On Saturday, December 12, at 2 p.m., there will be a graveside service at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Upperville, followed by a reception at Nordley, 1277 Kerfoot Lane, Upperville, Virginia.
