Henry was the son of John Carpenter Sr. and Caroline Zumbaugh, who married on 20 Oct 1860 in Marshall County, Indiana. The couple had three sons together--John Jr. (1860-1911), Charles (1862-1945), and Henry (1867-1942).

Henry first appeared with his family on the 1870 Census, living in Plymouth's Center Township, Marshall Co., Indiana, where John Carpenter Sr., aged 30, had a job with the railroad. Caroline, aged 28, was home with their three sons--John Jr., aged 10, Charles, aged 8, and Henry, aged 3.

By the 1880 Census, the family was living in Green Township (Argos area), Marshall County. John, aged 34, was farming. Caroline, aged 39, was keeping house. Still living at home with their parents were all three boys--John, aged 20, Charly, aged 18, and Henry, aged 12.

By the 1900 Census, Henry's parents had divorced. They would remarry a year later on 25 or 26 Aug 1901 in Marshall County.

When he was 16 years old, Henry married Marietta Bentz on 10 Sep 1885 in Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. They had two children together--Lillie (b. May 1888) and Fern Marie (b. 1896). Shortly thereafter Marietta began having mental problems and was admitted to the Northern Indiana Hospital for the Insane, where she eventually died in 1926. (Thanks to fellow F.A.G. contributor Barbara Shannon for the info about Henry's first marriage and first two children.)

There is a 1900 Census record for a Henry A. Carpenter, living at 6 E. Priscilla St. in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, aged 32 and employed as a machinist. With him is a wife named Pearl, born in Indiana in Dec 1879, and who has been married to Henry for one year and who has not had any children. With the couple is a child named Fern, aged 6, noted as having been born in July of 1893, which wasn't quite correct as Fern was born in July of 1896. Additionally, on the 1910 Census, Henry would only report having married twice, not thrice, AND Henry was noted as a farmer, not a machinist, on most of the census records, so I am not completely convinced that this Henry Carpenter is the same Henry Carpenter that is the subject of this bio, but the record is at least plausible enough to mention here. Whatever the case, it is unclear what became of this Pearl Carpenter.

On Christmas Day, 25 Dec 1902, Henry married for a second (third?) time, exchanging vows with Martha A. Kitzerow in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Martha was the daughter of George J.W. Kitzerow and Sophia Jahnke.

Henry and Martha appeared together on the 1910 Census, living in Alva, Woods Co., Oklahoma. Henry, aged 41, was farming. Martha, aged 28, reported that she had not yet had any children. Henry reported that it was his second marriage, Martha that it was her first.

By the 1920 Census, Henry and Martha had moved to Plymouth and were living at 700 Lincoln St. Henry, aged 52, told the census taker that he was retired. Martha, aged 38, reported that she was a seamstress.

By 1930, Henry had come out of retirement. They were still living in Plymouth, their address still 700 Lincoln St., a home they owned. Henry, aged 63, was working as a grocery dealer. Martha, aged 48, was keeping house. There were no children with the couple.

Henry, aged 72, and Martha, aged 57, were still living at their Lincoln St. address in 1940. Henry had officially retired.

Sadly, two years after that census, Henry died. Martha lived to age 82 or 83, passing in 1966.
