PORTLAND - Dorothy M. Barron, 95, of Portland, died Jan. 21, 2014 at The Cedars. She was born May 14, 1918, in Portland, a daughter of William and Gertrude Keefe Halpin. Dorothy was educated locally and was a 1937 graduate of Portland High School. She grew up on Munjoy Hill in Portland.

She worked for an insurance company as a secretary.

She married Richard A. Barron on June 2, 1945 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Dorothy travelled extensively with her husband Richard, who was a Lt. Col. in the Air Force. She volunteered with the American Red Cross while she travelled with her husband as an Air Force wife.

Dorothy was a communicant of St. Pius X Church. She was a Eucharistic Minister; volunteered at St. Joseph's Manor in the Pastoral Care Department and distributed Communion in homes. She was also a 30+ year volunteer with the Portland Public Schools at Lyseth School and the Religious Education Program at St. Pius X Church. In her leisure time, she became a foster grandparent and enjoyed bowling and playing Scrabble with family members. She was a member of the Wife's Clubs of military personnel.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Richard in 1990 and her sister Patricia McGeough in 2009. Surviving are her nieces and nephews, Shane Ellis of Maryland, Joseph McGeough, Michael McGeough of Portland, William McGeough of Portland, Eddie Connolly of Florida, Richard Connolly of Portland and Janet Gervais and her husband Gary of Portland; and many great nieces and great nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Cedars for the care that Dorothy received.

Visiting hours will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24th at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, at the funeral home, followed by a 9:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. (Portland Press Herald 1/22/2014)
