(1929-2000)
Charles Lee Adams Jr., 71, of Portsmouth, Ohio, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Southern Ohio Medical Center Scioto Campus.
He was born June 18, 1929, in Lexington, Ky., a son of the late Charles Lee Adams and Hazel Gritton Adams.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Anne Westerfield Adams, whom he married July 7, 1956, in Jeffersonville, Ind.; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles Lee "Westy" and Nancy Walk Adams of Charters, Ky., one daughter, Anne Westerfield Adams of Covington, Ky.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Billy and Irene Adams of Pineville, Ky., and Freddy Adams of Richmond, Ky.; one sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Ray Lunsford of Richmond, Ky.; two grandchildren, Lauren Suzanne Adams and Emily Rebecca Adams, both of Charters, Ky.; five nephews, , Benny and Doug Adams, Donald , Ronald and Daniel Lunsford of Richmond, Ky.; uncle and aunt, Doc and Dottie Adams of Louisville, KY.; several great-nieces and nephews; also Junior, Suzie and Angela McGlone.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a member of Emanuel Baptist Church in Lexington and a graduate of Henry Clay High School of Lexington. He attended Eastern Kentucky University and was a graduate of Transylvania University of Lexington and received a master's degree from the University of Kentucky. He was retired and was former football coach at Winchester and Clark County High School in Winchester, Ky., coach, teacher and principal at Portsmouth High School and principal at Clay High School at Rosemount until retirement. He served on the Ohio Athletic Board of Control, member of the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion, lifetime member of the Ohio Education Association and a Kentucky Colonel.
Mr. Adams played farm ball with the Milwaukee Braves and football at Eastern Kentucky University, basketball at Transylvania University and all sports for the U.S. Air Force. Also Charlie "Stoop" Adams was mentioned in C.M. Newton's Book "Newton's Law."
After retirement from his educational career, he became a cattle and tobacco farmer. He said, "The cows can't talk back and never complain."
Services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept, 28, 2000, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg, Ky., with the Rev. Paul Hagen of South Webster officiating, and interment in Mount Tabor Cemetery at Ribolt, Ky. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Don Fitch, Richard Snook, Billy Watson, Huey Blair, Mike Welston, Terry Boldman, Elmer Gregory, and Jeff Himes. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Stephenson, C.M. Newton, Andy Hopkins, Al Prewitt, Jack Tracy, Terry Cummins, Bob "Sug" Anderson, Bill Matthews, Joe Duff, Don Witt, Wayne Hughes, Marty Donini and Hall Burchett. Gary Billups will play the saxophone.
In lieu of flower donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
