DID FEAR OF CONSUMPTION DRIVE JOS. THOMAS TO SUICIDE?
FAMILY BELIEVES THIS IS THE CASE

South Side Man Takes Paris Green and Tells Family of Act When it is Too Late to Save His Life. Was 22

Despondency, caused it is believed by a fear that a cold which he was suffering from might develop into a more serious ailment, Joseph Thomas, aged 22, and residing at 1130 South Twenty-first street, committed suicide by taking paris green. Thomas took the poison at 3 o'clock and died at midnight.

The youth had been employed as a mason's helper up to a short time ago when he contracted a severe cold which had bothered him considerably. He had assisted his mother about the house yesterday and during the afternoon visited the barn where took poison(sic). Returning to the house he complained of distress but for several hours refused to tell the cause but finally said that he had taken paris green. A physician was hurriedly summoned but it was too late to save the boy's live, the poison having accomplished its purpose and at midnight Thomas died.

Thomas was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas and the family can assign no reason for the suicide, unless it was a fear of consumption entertained by the boy. Report of the case was made to the coroner last night and it was late today before the case was taken up.

It is not expected that an inquest will be held. Young Thomas was an industrious lad, did not drink and so far as the family knows no love affair.

Thomas is survived by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.

The funeral will be held tomorrow morning from St. Mary's church.
