FATHER OF HUGHIE JENNINGS, THE FAMOUS SHORTSTOP -- TOOK THE PLEDGE FROM FATHER MATHEW.
Early yesterday morning occurred the death of James Jennings, Sr., at his home in Avoca. The deceased had an extensive acquaintance throughout the valley and was the father of the famous shortstop of the Baltimore base ball team, Hugh Jennings.
Mr. Jennings possessed a pleasing and expressive countenance, a gentle and sympathetic nature, and was cheerful in all that he said or did. Such traits and trributes could not fail to endear him to all and to win the confidence of his associates. When but a boy in Westport, Ireland, he enrolled himself among the tousands who took the pledge from Rev. Theobald Mathew and for sixty-one years he wore the medal presented to him on that occasion and whenever he attended a temperance gathering the greatest respect was shown him.
During the past week he had been ill of pleurisy, but the symptoms were not alarming until Saturday night, when his heart became affected. He was 75 years of age and a resident of this country for almost fifty years, having first settled in Pittston and several years after in Avoca. His wife died about fifteen years ago. He is survived by one daughter and seven sons, namely: Mrs. Edward Walsh of Dunmore, John and Thomas of Colorado, Dr. Joseph of Pittston, Hugh of Baltimore and James, Henry and William of Moosic. The funeral will take place on Tuesday morning. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
