For the second reading of the liturgy celebrating her life, Sister Rose Patricia had chosen the words of St. Paul to Timothy, “to fan into flame the gift that God gave you...” and how this Dominican woman injected life into these words.
As fire races across a field
and ignites things in its path, Rose’s
influence spread to those with whom she came in contact and to those she brought God’s love.
Rose lived a life alive with the fire of God’s love.
Sister Rose Patricia was born to Patrick and Rose Farley Reilly in the Bronx. Both parents were from Ireland, so as a child she truly was “Patty’s Irish Rose.” Early in life her sister Margaret was called home to God, but Eileen and
her brother William shared their home with a foster sister, Elizabeth.
Throughout her life Rose maintained a deep and loving relationship with her niece and nephews
,all of whom identified her as a model of graciousness.
As a teacher in elementary schools, Sister Rose Patricia planted in young hearts a desire to learn and a love of learning. After many years in the classroom and planting many seeds, she served as principal on both the elementary and high school levels where students were encouraged to discern their potential and to achieve their personal goals. She also served her congregation as Director of Ministry, so not only were the youngsters but her peers ministered to by this gracious lady.
The call to a new direction was heard in 1981, and for thirty years Rose devoted her time and talents to those suffering from addiction. It was in this last ministry that the flame of love for those in need spread like wild fire. It was those who were loved into life, those whose lives were restored to sanity who spoke most eloquently of this gentle, gracious woman, for Rose’s quiet way of encouraging life helped clear away much of the debris we sometimes strew around us as we struggle toward wholeness.
Sister Rise Patricia was called to God quickly and suddenly, but we know her bags were packed and
she was ready. On her application for entrance into God’s service,Rosehad expressed her desire to serve God and to help others as a Dominican; at the Liturgy the day of her funeral,Fr. Tom Devery encapsulated the life or Rose Patricia as one lived as a loving messenger of God who brought souls from darkness of addiction to the fullness of new life.
Burial was in the convent cemetery.
