From 1960-1963, while serving in the U.S. Army Reserves, Ross worked as Technical Representative, System Analyst and Salesman for the UNIVAC Division of the Sperry Rand Corporation.
His computer programming and operational expertise brought him to the attention of the Blount Brother's Construction Company where he began working in 1963. In his 26 years with the company, he served as Director, Management Information Systems at Blount, Inc. and as Vice President, Management Information Systems of Blount International, Ltd., at the time of his retirement in 1989.
In 1990 Ross was offered a position with the Governor's Office/Finance Department of the State of Alabama where he stayed until his State retirement in 1998.
