Weslaco - On Sunday, September 13, 2009 our Father called His daughter Melida Cano Fox into His Presence to give her eternal peace. Born March 26, 1925, Melida was a life long resident of Weslaco and Progreso, Texas. Her parents were Clemente Cano+ and Guadalupe Zamora Cano+.

Melida was a hard working person and a patriot. She joined the ranks of the National Youth Administration during WWII and trained in aircraft sheet metal repairs for the war effort. Later, Melida trained in the medical profession and worked for Dr. Lancaster in Weslaco. Many in the local community knew her as “La Enfermera.”

During the latter years of her life, Melida suffered with Alzheimer’s. Despite her loss of memory, Melida remained in good nature and strove to remember her family members. Melida deeply loved her father Clemente Cano. She had the fondest memories of her youth during Cano family gatherings that included grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins; over 100 family members would gather during these family weekend rituals. The pleasant memories of a smokey, wood burning chimney and many women gathered to prepare the mid-day meal at these events were one of Melida’s most cherished moments.

Visitation is scheduled on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco – Chapel of The Angels. Funeral services for Melida will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 17, 2009 at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church. Celebrant will be Deacon Juan M. Delgado. Interment will follow at Campacuas Cemetery in Mercedes, TX.

Arrangements are under the direction of Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco, Inc. 2602 N. Texas, Weslaco, TX 78596 (956) 969-1461. Published by Guerra Funeral Home.
