Richard “Larry” Fleming

Larry passed away unexpectedly on August 26, 2015 at his home in Auburn, CA. He was the son of James “Hal“ Fleming and Lois Marie McGuire. He was born in Yale, OK in his grandfather’s home on the farm.

In March 1952 he joined the Navy. His basic training was in San Diego, followed by a couple months of electrician’s school, also in San Diego. On March 27, the Naval ship, the U.S.S. LSM#161, went to Korea. By December 1953 he was in the USN Hospital in Bremerton, Washington, followed by Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, in Oakland, California. He lost vision of an eye due to an accident and placed on temporary disability. He was honorably discharged from the US Navy August 15, 1958.

Larry’s occupation for 44 years was in the Maritime Industry, where he was an ILWU Clerk. He was a very strong supporter of his union, and of the United States.

He enjoyed flying and owned a plane for awhile. Everyone was amazed he obtained his pilot’s license after he was told he would never get one, because of the loss of vision one eye. He also owned a boat, horses, and many new cars throughout his life and enjoyed them all. He enjoyed the horse races most of all during his retirement years as well as his family.

Larry was married three times. The first marriage was short lived, to Polly Benz. The second marriage was to Annette Harding. They were married February 22, 1958 until the time she passed away in January 2001. On July 27, 2002 he married Janice Purser. They enjoyed retirement years together on their beautiful property in Auburn, CA.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years Janice, and her daughter Amy Breashears (Todd Breashears). His children Cheryl Palmer (Buddy Palmer), Lorry Fleming (Dallas Denery), Lynne Fleming–Plants; Grandchildren Jennifer Lagorio (Jeremiah Curtis), Cassie Palmer, Keegan Denery, Nicolas Plants; great-grandchildren Drayden and Olivia Curtis.

Larry is preceded in death by his second wife, Annette Fleming and son in law Ronald Plants.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday August 30, 2015 at 1:00pm in Mission Chapel at the Chapel of the Chimes Hayward, CA.
