Joseph John Schmitt Jr., 85, passed to his Heavenly Father on Thursday, August 27, 2015.

He was a 1948 graduate of St. Xavier High School, and a member of the St. X Alumni Association. A Korean War veteran, he served in the Kentucky Air National Guard, active duty USAF, and Air Force Reserve. He received his commission after completion of the Advanced AFROTC course at the University of Kentucky.

Mr. Schmitt was educated and nurtured at the University of Kentucky College Of Engineering by a talented and caring faculty and staff. He received his BSME degree in August 1954. At UK he was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma Honorary Engineering Fraternities and the Arnold Air Society. He was a Life Member of the UK Alumni Association, a member of the UK Fellows Society, UK Quadrangle Society, and UK President’s Club. He participated in the UK Advocates Network. He loved, was proud of, and passionately supported UK everyday of his life. He treasured his continued relationship with members of the College of Engineering staff.

Mr. Schmitt spent his engineering career in various technical managerial positions with E.I. DuPont, having retired after 35 years as the Louisville Works Staff Mechanical Engineer. After his Dupont career he was a private consultant with the Business Services Division of LG&E Energy Corp. for 9 years.

His beloved wife of 48 years, Joy Louise Collard Schmitt preceded him in death in 2005.

He is survived by his children, Mark Alan Schmitt (Carol) Louisville, Julie Schmitt Conrey (Kevin) St. Louis and Joseph John Schmitt III (Sandy) Louisville; 10 grandchildren, Zachary Duerr Schmitt (Kayla) St. Louis, Austin Matthew Schmitt (Lauren), Miller Jospeh Conrey, Alexandra Hagan Schmitt, Catherine Clark Conrey, Madeline Elizabeth Schmitt, Patrick Kieran Conrey, Jacqueline Alexandra Schmitt, Gabriel Lee Schmitt, Mariah Joy Conrey; and 1 great grandchildren, Brayden Zachary Schmitt.

Mr. Schmitt was a devout Roman Catholic and was a member of St. Martha Church, where God led him, he served on the Parish Council and taught Evening Religious Education classes.

His funeral Mass will be held at 10am Monday, August 31, 2015 at St. Martha Catholic Church, 2825 Klondike Lane, with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
