Leonard Boyd Hawkins was one of 14 children born to Nathaniel Hawkins and Sarah Carnes. Leonard along with brothers Benjamin K. Hawkins and William Harris Hawkins all served overseas during World War I. Leonard was severely wounded in hand to hand combat on the 5th of October,1918 while participating in the Battle of the Argonne Forest,in France. Leonards'unit E Company 372nd Infantry Battalion was part of the famous 93rd Infantry Division-Colored, which received two of France's highest military awards.Leonard, after the war returned to Douglas County, later marrying Camilla Procter from Randolph County, Georgia, a few years later. By 1930, Leonard had departed from the Douglas County area and was living in Randolph County, Georgia. Children of Leonard and Camilla include Isaac, Maggie Mae, Ida Mae, Mattie Mae, Lora Nell, Willie C, Minnie Mae, Leonard Hawkins Jr. Leonard was in the care of the Veterans Administration in Tuskegee, Alabama, when he passed away on October 9th 1952. Leonard was preceded in life by his wife Camilla, grandparents Peter Carnes and Rachel Polk Carnes, grandmother Harriet Hawkins. Parents, Nathaniel Hawkins and Sarah Carnes Hawkins. Brothers James Peter Hawkins,George Washinton Hawkins, William Harrison Hawkins, Benjamin Kirk Hawkins. Sisters: Emma Baker,Josephine Poole,Emily Johnson,Frances Holloman,Mary Jones,Mattie Mathis,Minnie Hawkins.Leonard was survived by his 8 children,and brother Marion Hawkins of Winston,Georgia.
