1 Aug 2006: Leon J. Kurtz, 84, Spang Crest Manor, Lebanon, died Sunday, July 30, 2006, in the home. He was born October 9, 1921, in Richland, a son of the late Rev. Michael and Annie Nissley Kurtz. He was an active member of Lebanon Church of the Brethren. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in Japan and the Philippines. He graduated from Richland High School, received his bachelor's degree from Penn State, and his Master's in Education from University of Pennsylvania. He taught and was the principal of the Fredericksburg High School and then began his career in the Lebanon School District where he retired as the elementary superintendent. During his years at Lebanon, he was involved in the building of the Northwest Elementary School and the establishment programs for Hispanic children. An active member of his church, served the community as judge of elections, member of the Literacy Council, board of Lebanon Red Cross, and member of numerous state and local educational associations and Lebanon County Education Honor Society. He volunteered extensively at Good Samaritan Hospital in the gift shop and information desk. Surviving are son Cedric M., spouse of Jane Kurtz of Pittsburgh; grandsons Matthew Kurtz of Boston, MA, and Justin, spouse of Jesse Kurtz of New York City, NY; and brother-in-law Henry Homan of Lebanon. He was preceded in death by wife Mary Ellen Homan Kurtz on Feb. 12, 1994, son Gregory Kurtz, brothers Rev. Ray A. Kurtz, Rev. Earl H. Kurtz, and sister Eva R. Flory.
