William Hale "Colonel" Lafon was the son of Zackrus K. Lafon and Peggy Lucas Lafon and was the husband of Lousinda J. Lafon (born in 1838). The June 18, 1880 census shows his family were farmers. Their children were, James Harvey (1854-1935), he was married to Mary E. Lafon; John Crocket Lafon (1854–1934); Nancy Elizabeth Agnes Lafon (1856–1934); Mary Catherine Lafon (1858–1934); Samuel Taylor Lafon (1860–1944); George W. Lafon (1862–1922); Louemma C. Lafon (1864–1943); Laura B. Lafon (1866–1941); Ollie V. Lafon (1868–1930); Ettie M. Lafon (1870–1932); Launia Lafon (1872–1949); Lulas S. Lafon (1874–1933); Mintie Sherman Lafon (1875–1958); Armintie S. Lafon (1876–1958); Perlina M. Lafon (1878–1951); William Lafon (1880–1933); Miles A Lafon (1891–1938). He served with Company H, 36th Virginia Infantry listed in Giles County Virginia in the Civil War where he made gunpowder. He is listed in the 1860 Giles County census beside John B. Miller, who was known to make gunpowder, adding credence to the story passed to W.H.C.'s descendants. He is buried in a small family cemetery in Clover Hollow where his gravestone is illegible and sunken in the ground.
