"Judge Frank L. Covert, Oakland county circuit judge since 1919, was injured fatally Friday night when his automobile ran into the rear of a truck trailer on the Dixie highway at Silver Lake road, a mile north of Pontiac. He died at 9 p.m. in Pontiac General Hospital of a fractured skull, three hours after the crash.
Judge Covert, a native of Oakland county, had a career of public service of more than 40 years. He first served as messenger in the state legislature. He was circuit court commissioner, state senator, prosecuting attorney for three terms, and circuit court judge. He was the senior member of the circuit bench.
He was born Nov. 23, 1867, on the Waterford township farm homesteaded by his parents, Hudson P. and Mary Sheldon Covert, who came from New York state to the Oakland county farm in 1832. In 1886, the family moved to Pontiac, where Judge Covert had attended grade and high schools.
He studied law with the firm of Taft & Smith in Pontiac and was admitted to the bar in 1890.
In 1915, he was elected state senator from the twelfth district, comprising Oakland and Washtenaw counties. He was re-elected in 1917. While he was in the senate he fathered the Covert road law, under which hundreds of miles of paved roads were built in this county."
