Died: Thursday, April 26, 2001

Boyd Marion Sobers, 87, died at his home on Thursday, April 26, 2001.

He was born on March 24, 1914 in Wyandot County, Ohio to Irma and Wilbur Sobers.

He graduated from Eden High School near Upper Sandusky, then from Ohio Northern University (B.A.) in Ada, and received a master's degree from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland.

In 1942, he married Martha Frieda Schilling. Mr. Sobers was a WWII veteran of the United States Air Force, having taken officer training in Charleston, West Virginia and an assignment to Hickam Field in Hawaii.

A teacher by profession, he taught in Roundhead, New London and Indian Hills High Schools.

The remainder of his teaching career he was a professor of history and political science at Ohio Northern University.
During that tenure, he gained a reputation as an expert in Ohio history and wrote the Collier's Encyclopedia annual yearbook section on activities in the state.

Mr. Sobers was active in community affairs, serving on the Village Council in Ada.

He was also active in the Ada Republican Party (Central Committeeman), Community Improvement Corporation, the United Way, and the First Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Martha, and three children: Sharon Jo Sobers, of Montgomery, Ohio; Ellen Rose (Sobers) Marshall and husband, John, of Mainville, Ohio; and Stephen J. Sobers and wife, Helen, of Washington Court House, Ohio, as well as four grandchildren: Jennifer (Sobers) Johnson and husband, Lee, of Greer, South Carolina; Philip Sobers of Washington Court House, Ohio; John Marshall of Washington, D.C. and wife Julie, of Baltimore, Maryland; and one great-grandchild, Olivia Marshall.

Mr. Sobers had been a resident of Washington Court House since 1998.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 29 at the Salem United Methodist Church near Upper Sandusky.

Friends may call at the Morrow Funeral Home in Washington Court House from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Ohio Northern University Scholarship Fund in care of Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio, 45810.
