The Kansas City Star (MO) – Page 3 – Sunday, April 1, 1956:
A 25-year-old expectant mother died last night at the General hospital of injuries suffered yesterday when the motor car she was driving struck a bridge abutment on U.S. 71 about one-half mile south of M-150. An attempt to save the child by a Caesarean operation failed.
Mrs. Mildred Jane Barclay, 5404 Maple street, Mission, died at 7:35 o'clock last night, about an hour after surgeons had performed the operation.
Attendants at the hospital said the operation was performed after it became apparent Mrs. Barclay would not live. The child normally would have been born in about two months.
The mishap occurred shortly before noon at a bridge just north of the Jackson-Cass county line. Mrs. Barclay was taken to the hospital in a Grandview Air Force base ambulance. She was driving north on U.S. 71 when she lost control of the car. Highway patrolmen, who conducted an investigation at the scene, could find no apparent cause for the mishap.
Members of Mrs. Barclay's family said last night she had just left a physician's office, where she had had a routine prenatal examination, and was on her way to visit friends in Hickman Mills.
Mrs. Barclay was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a graduate of Central high school. She was a member of the Michigan Avenue Baptist church.
She leaves her husband, Olan L. Barclay, a daughter, Paula Barclay, 4, and a son, Brent Barclay, 2, all of the home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. Markle, and four sisters, Miss Shirley Jean Markle, Miss Joyce Ann Markle, Miss Janet Sue Markle and Miss Nancy Lou Markle, and a brother, Charles Lee Markle, all of 3014 Norton avenue.
The bodies of Mrs. Barclay and the infant were taken to the Newcomer funeral home.
