Mourners Of Teacher Fill Church
Mourners filled St. Barnabas Church yesterday for the funeral of Miss Helen M. Swift. Schools closed at 1 PM. to permit teachers to attend. Rev. Leslie F. Wallace officiated. Willard E. Boyden, principal of East Falmouth school, was organist. Pallbearers were Paul Dillingham, Alvern P. Clough, Newton Jeffrey, John B. Quick, John R. Friar, and Harold P. Davis. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Malchman's where Miss Swift's mother is employed was closed for the funeral.
Miss Helen M. Swift, sub-primary teacher at East Falmouth school, was killed instantly at 3:30 A.M. Tuesday when the car in which she was a passenger left Route 130 in Mashpee and was cut in half as it struck a tree. Miss Swift's companion, Nino G. Pola of Sandwich, driver of the car, was taken to Cape Cod hospital in critical condition.
Miss Swift was the daughter of Mrs. Esther Binda and Angus V. Swift, and niece of Dr. T.L. Swift and Mrs. George H. Greene. Her father, Angus V. Swift, is an executive of the firm of E. B. Badger and Company, Boston construction engineers. His home is in Needham. Mr. Pola's condition is improving and he is now expected to recover. He is still on the danger list.
The accident occurred on a sharp curve between Milia's restaurant and the Hotel Attaquin. The Pola car, a 1940 convertible Buick coupe, was travelling east at high speed according to Mashpee police. It left the road half way through the corner, snapped off a telephone guide pole, caromed off a large tree, and came to rest against another tree in the front yard of Mr. and Mrs. George Avant.
