Dorothy was born June 15, 1851, in Gschwend, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. She was baptized shortly after birth and confirmed on Palm Sunday in 1865. At the age of 15, Dorothy made the journey to the United States with her sister, Eva, settling in Milwaukee with their brother, Michael.

On December 28, 1872, Dorothy married Albert Bartz in Milwaukee. By the time of the 1880 census, Albert and Dorothy and their family had moved to Iowa, first to Newburg Township, Mitchell County, and then to Union Township, Worth County, near Grafton, in the same area where four of Albert's brothers also settled. All were engaged in farming.

Albert and Dorothy were the parents of five children: Emilie Rosina Johanna "Amelia" (Bartz) Lange, Hulda Anna Ulricke (Bartz) Engle, Wilhelm Michael Bartz, Dorothea Albertina Emilie Bartz, and Richard Johann Bartz.
