Arriving in the newly emerging "Navajo Nation" at the turn of the twentieth century, Alexander both experienced as well as contributed to the changing times of the Native Americans. He chose to live and stay in the area, marry a Navajo wife, and contribute to the community.

Son of Edwin Black & Ruth Angell Bowman born in 1874 in Indiana, Alexander migrated with his family to Archer, Alachua, Florida where his father was a missionary. After the death of his father in 1886, he graduated from college (5 years) (probably theology) and moved to Fort Defiance, Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache, Arizona. By 1905 he was a Presbyterian missionary. In 1910 was a practicing Clergyman in Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache, Arizona.

After the marriage of Ruth's other son, George Edwin Black, in 1911 Indiana, Ruth moved from Indiana to New Mexico and lived with her other son, Alexander, until her death in 1915. She was buried in Gallup, McKinley, New Mexico following a car accident.

Alexander married Nellie Damon (one-half blooded Navajo) on Oct 1916 in Fort Defiance, Arizona. She was the daughter of Anson C Damon, "Pioneer Indian Trader" of Fort Defiance. By 1920 Alexander had become an "Indian Trader." In 1930 he was a manager in a "Trading Store." In 1940 he was a General Merchandise Merchant. He died in Fort Defiance in 1954 and Nellie in 1955. Throughout these years he also taught the Navajo.
