Obituary: Maxine Armstrong, 89, of Greenfield and formerly of Aurora, died August 8, 2006 in the Dade County Nursing Home where she had resided since 1998 after suffering a severe stroke.
She was born October 30, 1916 in Dade County to Elza and Mary Tressie (Cheek) Asbell.
She graduated from Dadeville High School and attended Southwest Missouri State Teachers College, where she received her teaching degree. She received her masters degree from Drury University in Springfield. She taught at Franklin School in Aurora and retired in 1976 after completing 40 years of teaching. Both she and her husband, Leroy, taught the Ozark Life Class for over 13 years.
She was a member of the Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ, Missouri Retired Teachers Association, Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association, Lawrence County Historical Society and Delta Kappa National Teachers Organizaion. She enjoyed reading, writing and attending auctions and garage sales. Her love of antiques and early American ancestor history were prevalent in her home with many antique collections; however, her favorite hobby and the one for which she was well known, was quilting.
Survivors include: one half-sister, Anna Marie Kirksey of Pleasant Hope; one niece, Rose Dunn; several nephews; and a host of friends.
Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, J. Leroy Armstrong; her parents; her stepmother, Vera Asbell; her brother, Wendell Asbell; and her half-brother, Leonard Asbell.
Graveside services, under the direction of Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home, were held August 10 in Maple Park Cemetery.
